Seeing Red Over Blue Exorcist

Following the recent announcement that Viz Media will be streaming an english dub version in Blue Exorcist in 2013 Manga Entertainment has confirmed that they will continue to push ahead with their subtitled only release due out this summer.

Blue Exorcist is a bit of a bench mark for Manga in that it is their first major release in a very long time that is subtitle only, of course it is a massive gamble as subtitle only releases tend to alienate the casual fans who prefer to watch their anime with english language dubs. Manga has mentioned that they will likely release the series with its english dub in the future but with a series as popular as this they want to get it out to fans as soon as possible.

Manga Entertainment had also expressed their disappointment about the fact that they feel let down by licensor of the series who never consulted with them that there was going to be an english dub for the series. Manga have also expressed frustration at the amount of anime fans who have lashed out at them for releasing a subtitle only release even though this is something that many serious fans have demanded for many years.

It seems that Manga’s first sub release could leave the distributor with a bitter taste and might make them think twice about doing the same in the future, a lot of it will boil down to how well the series sells.

What are your opinions of subtitled only releases is this something you have been waiting to happen or would you prefer to wait a bit longer and have a dubbed and subtitled release even if it means waiting an extra 12 months?

I would rather it was just sub for most anime, most english voice actors give me a headache, plus I have to say some english dubs just ruin anime for me, the actors cant seem to match the tone or feeling for the characters, so even if it is getting dubbed im all for just the subtitles, i love this anime and im scared to hear the dub for fear it might be rubbish.

I feel bad for mangaUK about the people that criticise them because its just subbed. Just wait till it comes out in english if you don’t like it subbed. Its pretty obvious that they’d pick it up dubbed at some point and would still have to wait just as long. Don’t get me wrong, I watch dubbed quite a lot, I watch subbed too. I got both BE dvds on pre-order. Looking forward to getting them :-) .

  3. Where-as subs are a little more authentic, and I don’t usually have a problem watching subs, I feel this is a bit of a strange move for Manga Ent, especially when the market is the way it is at the moment…

It has always seemed like subbed anime has been much preferred over dubbed which is why I can understand why they have done this; why pay more to get anime dubbed when the vast majority of the audience will only want to listen to it in Japanese anyway? It’s already been evident that some companies are finding it harder to release want audiences want whilst maintaining a reasonable turnover; for example some series or films are only released on DVD, not on blu-ray

I HATE watching dubbed anime. The English speaking voice actors never manage to put the same tone, emotion, and standard into their work, as their Japanese fellows do. Also, i think because there is a humor difference between the east and the west, English voice actors don’t seem to grasp everything as they should, once again affecting their work.

Saying that, i have family whom are dyslexic and they like dubbed because they can’t keep up with the subtitles in the subbed versions.

Blue exorcist is a good show/manga. I all the volumes out right now and going to buy it subbed as well as dubbed when it come out. It shouldn’t matter if you love the anime just buy it
